Come on and Drop Already

I'm posting this for Julie. Hopefully she can start posting them under her name soon so you know who is who.

Last night we were able to log on for a bit and work on a quest in Strangethorn, Venture Mining Company. We were trying to get the Singing Blue Crystals from the goblins. I realize at level 41 that I will not get a drop with every creature I kill and I am fine with that. Last night we were getting drops about 1 in 8 or 1 in 10. If you are familiar with this quest or area even, you already know that the goblins blend in so well with the forest that you cannot see them until you are on them or they are already attacking you. Add a 2 year old and a puppy into the mix and it can get both frustrating and exciting at this point. But we did manage to get 20 crystals, 10 for Dave and 10 for Cat before we quit for the night.

Maybe tonight we will be able to start the Skull Splinter Tusks quest. Something tells me that it will take a couple attempts to get 36 tusks, 18 a piece.

I must admit that Julie had a heck of a time getting the crystals to drop last night.
I have some screenshots at home of Cat taking out her frustrations on the goblins. I'll try and post them tonight.

In other news, I respecced Dave to shadow spec to help pour on the dps a bit. I'm still doing some research but I'm probably going to spec Cat arms too. Seems as we get higher level that our dps works but I'm used to more from playing Kelnix. Any warriors that happen to stumble on this post, leave me some tips.

Came over from BRK

lvl 70 prot spec warrior but I leveled as an arms/protection hybrid. What are you wondering about?

I'm wondering what would be a good tanking dps spec for Julie's warrior.

She is currently prot but her dps is lacking especially after playing a rogue. Can you recommend a good build that will last us through the 50s at least?

Something I'm a little worried about is that our gear is lacking so I wonder how well Cat will be able to tank elites while I melt their faces. Not saying we won't ever PUG but we do so rarely.

Well in general leveling as protection is painful because of the lack of dps, BUT since you both play together a lot/all of the time I can see how being able to hold aggro off the shadow priest would allow the group dps to be pretty nice. So I'll try to craft you a spec with enough prot to have good aggro generating abilities while improving cat's dps.
Questions...does cat usually fight in def stance or battle stance and why? How much has she played around with shield slam now that she has it? At lvl 70 my shield slam hits quite hard and generates more threat than any other move I have.

Cat is normally in battle stance, only switching to defensive to taunt.

She has a shield but hasn't tried out the shield slam yet. Cat likes dual wielding.

I wish I intrinsically knew how much you know about warriors, threat generation etc but I'll try to hit the highlights here.
1) You survive much longer in def stance (you get an additional 10% dmg taken off every time you get hit)
2) You generate MUCH MORE threat in def stance (130%) (and 15% additional threat with the defiance talents) Battle/berserker stance generates only 80% threat, which happens to be the same as a priest.
3) You generate only 80% dmg in def stance compared to battle

So here's the thing...if cat were prot specced in def stance she would do a little less damage but the priest could unleash hades and the mob wouldn't even blink an eye at dave. Cat would also live longer. On the other hand cat can go battle stance...be squishier, do more damage but would need to roughly do as much dmg as dave to keep the mobs attention (and or taunt a lot which is really bad form) Or we could do our best at making a build that lets be mostly prot specced to get the bonus survivability from talents while staying battle stance. You won't be as good a tank as you could in def stance, nor as good a dpser as if we respecced you mostly arms..but you may be a happy medium.

So the decision for you is do you want me to tweak your protection build to keep great survivability and up the defensive stance damage while never letting any baddies get to dave or do you want to be a damage powerhouse that is somewhat squishier and could have a harder time keeping mobs off dave.

Lastly try shield slam for a while...you will probably get a lot more damage out of it then what you do with your offhand.

I have to admit I'm a warrior newb pretty much. I didn't realize the amount of threat generated by defensive stance was that much higher.

We'll have to play around with defensive stance and shield slam tonight.

If you could work up a prot spec that would let Cat do more dps while still keeping all the agro that would be awesome. Thanks for all the comments!

Without ss (shield slam) at lvl 40.

This build could be good for dps dual wielding in def stance, BUT I really don't feel too comfortable with it...it may be pretty dent for your style of gameplay..the problem with is that you won't get to some of the key tanking talents till your high 60's
and I'd work my way to this http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TA0czZVZbEtoG0zcesL

With shield slam at lvl 40

Where I would put the next points if you went with the "with ss" build
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LV0cZVZbEtoG0z0xo

and here's my build which if for tanking outland instances. I can solo with it fine from a survivability standpoint but my dps is nowhere near what it would be with a dps spec. This is why I level my new BM hunter (lvl 45) when I want to solo and destroy stuff. This build in an instance is great stuff though.

You'll notice in all these specs I didn't spend much/anything in tactical mastery. That's cause when tanking I usually am in def stance the whole time except for possibly at the start so I don't do much stance dancing in most fights. It's a judgement call though...many people swear by tactical mastery and think you're an idiot for not taking it...that you're gimping yourself horribly not being able to retain as much rage while stance dancing etc. It very much depends on game style, what your chacter is doing, what spec you are blah blah blah. You still retain I believe it's 10 range naturally without tactical mastery.

it seemed to have cut off my armory link. Khatia on gnomeregan

That is exactly what I'm looking for.
I may have a few more questions but this looks brilliant. For what that is worth from a warrior newb.

Julie says we'll have to try out shield slam tonight.

Not a prob...i may forget to check your forum for a few days but I'm sure I will while at work on Monday to see if you have any new questions.

Where's my update on how shield slam worked out etc?

It seemed to work really well. I was taking on 3 mobs at a time and keeping agro pretty well. All in all it was very successful.
